Varicose veins
Veins in the legs can swell and becoming irregular in shape, these are called varicose veins. They develop when the valves in the veins aren't working properly and don't keep the blood circulating. This condition isn't life threatening but can be uncomfortable and unsightly. The vein valves leak because the weight of the blood going from the heart to the lower legs presses against the walls of the veins. Symptoms include, twisted blue veins present on the legs or any other part of the body, aching, heavy legs and ankle swelling.
Factors that contribute to varicose veins are wearing tight clothing; standing for long periods of time, being overweight and it can also be hereditary. There are many treatments available to prevent or remove the varicose veins. Support stockings and leg elevation methods are some of the non-surgical options used. Injection sclerotherapy is a surgical treatment where the veins are injected with chemicals that close the valves. Other surgical procedures remove the veins completely or, if the veins are thin enough they can be removed through laser or heat treatment.
