Under active thyroid (hypothyroidism)

The thyroid gland found at the back of the neck produces hormones that keep the metabolism functioning effectively. If the thyroid is under active it produces less hormones and tends to slow down the bodies functions. 1 in 50 women and 1 in 1000 men develop the symptoms associated with under active thyroid. These symptoms are muscle weakness, hoarse voice, flaky skin and weight gain.

The cause of this condition is iodine deficiency, which is very rare in the UK as our salt has iodine added at the manufacturing stage. The gland is more commonly damaged through an illness that runs in the family that causes inflammation of the gland. Thyroxine is a drug that can be taken in tablet form to replace the hormones that aren't being produced by the thyroid gland. The drug is only given if symptoms are severe, otherwise no treatment is necessary.
