Twisted ovaries
The ovaries can become twisted when a cyst grows on the stem from the ovary. A cyst is a fluid-filled sack and can vary in size and usually contains a water or thicker paste like fluid. The cysts can cause irregular periods and abdominal pain and discomfort. An ovarian cyst can be an early form of cancer, however 95% are not cancerous. If the ovaries become twisted hospital treatment is usually needed and sometimes the cyst is even removed when there are no symptoms because it isn't always possible to tell what type of cyst it is without looking at it under a microscope. Removal reduces the risk of the cyst turning cancerous. In other cases, the cyst may burst, causing sudden severe pain in the lower abdomen thus requiring surgery. The pain depends on what the cyst contained, whether it is infected and whether there has been any bleeding.
