Tonsillectomy

A tonsillectomy is the removal of inflamed tonsils. Tonsils are located at the back of the throat behind the nasal passage and are small glands that are though to fight infections. Tonsils can become infected, usually in childhood, by viruses and bacteria. The tonsils become red, swollen and painful as a result of the infection. Other symptoms include fever, chills and bad breath. A tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure, which is performed to remove the infected tonsils. The surgery is considered a routine operation and can be performed on an out-patient basis. The tonsils are removed through the mouth and no external incision is necessary. Removal takes place under general anaesthetic with the base of the tonsils being burned with an electrical cauterising unit. Immediately after the tonsillectomy, the head needs to be elevated and an ice pack can be used to reduce swelling. Once the tonsils are removed, a patient can recover completely within a couple of weeks.
