Talipes (club foot)

This is a condition that people are born with and occurs when the ankle is twisted with the foot pointing downwards and inwards. 1 in every 1000 babies is born with talipes, with 50% of them having both feet affected by the condition. The condition makes it very difficult for the child to walk. The cause of talipes is unknown, however it is suggested that it is hereditary. It is also thought that the foot develops in such a way because of the positioning in the womb.

Treatments are often painful and can take a number of years to overcome. The aim of the treatment is to give the child flexibility, plus a pain free and functional foot. Treatment can begin within weeks of the birth, with many having physiotherapy, gentle manipulation, splints and/or surgery. To make sure the foot stays in the correct position special boots may be warn constantly for 2-3months and then at night only, for up to 4 years.
