This skin condition causes the skin cells to reproduce rapidly so there is a constant shredding of dead skin cells. The condition can flare up anywhere on the body but is most commonly found on the elbows, knees and scalp. It affects 2% of the UK population and is found mainly in people between 11 and 45 years old. Symptoms include red, flaky and itchy skin. This condition is not contagious and varies from a small patch to a large area of the body being affected.
There is often a genetic reason behind the cause of this condition but infections, certain medicines and stress can all be contributing factors. There is unfortunately no cure but there are ways to prevent the condition returning. For example tar based shampoos and even sun exposure can improve the condition. However in a lot of cases, treatment isn't always needed.
