Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)

The Thyroid gland is positioned in the neck and lies in front of the windpipe. If the gland becomes overactive it releases more hormones into the blood stream. An overactive thyroid can lead to shaking; sleeping badly and losing weight even if appetite has increased (as the body's metabolism speed up). 1 in 50 women and 1 in 1000 men develop overactive thyroid each year. The condition can be treated successfully and in the majority of cases requires no treatment. However their are treatments available to bring the thyroid hormones down to the correct level.
