Knee replacement
A knee replacement may be necessary if pain is being caused because the cartilage on the knee joint has become warn. The knee area becomes painful, swollen and stiff and can often lead to the joint becoming immobile. The knee joint gets damaged mainly because of arthritis, wear and tear and dislocation of the knee. The need for a knee replacement is often for older people who are less active so the new knee joint is less likely to need replacing. However younger people are having replacements as they are now lasting for over 20 years.
The knee joint is replaced by fitting implants to form and artificial joint. This has to be done through surgery using general anaesthetic usually lasting between one and three hours. Following the operation rest and physiotherapy is needed to regain full use of the knee.
