Irritable bowel syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder that causes abdominal pain and intermittent diarrhoea, often alternating with constipation. It is a very common condition, affecting more women than men between the ages of 20 and 30. The symptoms of IBS include rapid transit of foods through the body, bloating, abdominal tenderness and swelling, headaches, tiredness and anxiety.
Stress and anxiety are not only symptoms, but also a cause of IBS, as 60% of people with IBS have psychological symptoms such as depression. The real cause for IBS is not really known but it is thought that it can develop after a gastrointestinal infection or caused by a suffers diet. Therefore a change in diet is the only treatment needed for most. Avoiding foods that increase IBS should be avoided, as should alcohol, caffeine and spicy food. There are drugs available to ease the pain and reduce the effects of IBS; also alternative medicines have been proven affective. Acupuncture, peppermint oil capsules or Chinese herbal medicine may be used to treat IBS.
If there have been no changes to your medical condition over the last 12 months, Cover My Travels can provide a comprehensive travel insurance policy with no additional charge.
