Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

Women of a certain age, usually 50 plus experience the menopause. This is when the body no longer produces the reproductive hormones. This causes effects such as, heart disease, strokes and brittle bones, all caused by the lack of oestrogen. HRT is an artificial replacement of the female hormone oestrogen and can minimise the effects of the menopause. Even though HRT can reduce the symptoms it does carry risks of its own. The risks and benefits are discussed at great length with a GP and HRT should only be taken if it is really necessary. Risks of taking HRT include, breast cancer and strokes. HRT shouldn't be taken if a woman has had breast cancer, severe liver disease and/or had a stroke. There are many different types of HRT and many may be tried before the right one for an individual is found. It can be administered in a patch or tablet form depending on the type of HRT being taken.
