Glaucoma

This condition affects the eyes and can lead to loss of sight if left untreated. Glaucoma is common in older people with one person in ten over the age of 70 getting the condition. We all have fluid in our eyes called aqueous humour, which creates pressure in the eye to give it shape; glaucoma is caused by the flow of fluid being blocked.

It develops slowly and the loss of sight is gradual and painless until it reaches the advance stages, which leads to symptoms. They include red painful eyes, enlarged pupil that is oval in shape and misty vision. Unusually the pain may be felt as toothache or a headache. The symptoms may only be present for a few hours but then will return. The available treatment aims to reduce the pressure within the eye to prevent further damage to the optic nerve. Eye drops and laser treatment are the most effective methods with surgery being used as a last resort. Unfortunately if the glaucoma is untreated and vision is lost, it can never be restored.
