Fractures (provided they are successfully repaired)

Fractures are when a bone cracks through excessive force, the fracture can either be a straight break across the bone, or slanting through the bone or the bone may be shattered. The pain can be very intense and a fracture causes swelling, decoloured skin, grinding or a grating sensation. If the fracture occurs on a limb it may sit at an abnormal angle and may make the limb immobile.

Inabilities to cope with the pressure put upon the bone along with minor knocks (if bones are already weak through age or illnesses) are all causes of fractures. Once the bone has been fractured it needs to be realigned which is often done by pulling and bringing the ends of the fracture together, this is done by general anaesthetic. Depending on the type and location of the fracture it may take many weeks or months to recover. The fracture needs to remain secure while the bone heals; this is done through a plaster cast or surgery to insert steel plates and screws.
