Fibroids

These are benign tumours, which are smooth, muscular and fibrous tissue growths found in the womb. They are enclosed in fibrous capsules and do not spread. Fibroids vary in size, shape and often several occur together. There are often no symptoms caused by fibroids other than infertility. There is no known reason behind fibroids other than they are more likely to occur during the reproductive years when oestrogen and progesterone are at their highest levels. Treatment is only necessary if the symptoms are painful and bleeding is severer. Endometrial ablation is a surgical treatment for fibroids where part of the womb is removed.
