Medical conditions
Enlarged prostate (benign)
This condition can only affect men, as women don't have a prostate gland in their body. The gland is situated just below the bladder. The main function of the prostate is it produces prostatic fluid. The prostate can become enlarged, but only usually affects men over the age of 50. The enlargement can be cancerous but in may cases it is benign and nothing to really worry about. The reason for the enlargement is the prostate absorbs large amounts of the male hormone, testosterone. This causes an increase in the growth of cells in the prostate, and an increase in how long the cells live.
Symptoms include difficulty in going to the toilet, having to go more often than usually and going more frequently at night. Many enlarged prostates don't require treatment as the symptoms are very mild and can be eased by changing lifestyle. Avoiding alcohol, caffeine and increasing fruit and fibre can all help the enlarged prostate. If the symptoms are more serious then there are two types of medication available. Alpha-blockers can reduce the muscle tone in the lower part of your bladder and prostate so it is easier to pass urine and Finasteride, which acts slowly over a period of months to reduce the size of your prostate.' Surgery is also an option where part or the entire prostate is removed to stop the symptoms.
If there have been no changes to your medical condition over the last 12 months, Cover My Travels can provide a comprehensive travel insurance policy with no additional charge.
