Endometriosis

Is a condition where the cells that are normally found lining the womb are also found in other areas of the body but usually within the pelvis. Each month this tissue outside of the womb, under normal hormonal control, is built up and then breaks down and bleeds in the same way as the lining of the womb. The blood has no way of leaving the body; this leads to inflammation, pain and the formation of scar tissue. The most common symptoms are painful periods and extreme tiredness. In some cases there are no symptoms and many get better without treatment. However there are drug and hormone treatments, and surgery can be used to remove areas of endomentrial.
