Ear infection

Infections can occur in the outer or middle part of the ear, and happen when germs such as bacteria or viruses irritate the ear. Children are the most common sufferers and the infection can be passed on from child to child. Symptoms depend on where the infection is, if in the outer ear swelling and a yellow fluid discharge give signs that there is an infection. Middle ear infections cause earache; high temperature, slight deafness and can often cause sickness.

Causes can be anything from a general skin condition leading to an outer ear infection to a common cold causing a middle ear infection. The cause of the ear infection effects the treatment required. Middle ear infections often clear up within three days so requires no treatment, however common cold remedies can lessen the pain. Creams and eardrops can treat outer ear infections, as can antibiotics if the infection is bacterial.
