Dermatitis (provided oral steroids are not being taken)

Contact eczema is also known as dermatitis and is a skin reaction. The skin usually becomes inflamed, red, and itchy and can sometimes cause the skin to blister. This skin condition is caused when a material or substance comes in to contact with the skin, which causes an allergic reaction. Irritants like detergents, cleaning products and chemicals can be common causes of dermatitis. Also leather, nickel, perfumes and some plants can cause the allergic reaction.

As with many of the skin conditions the aim of the treatment is to control the exposure to the cause, heal the skin and keep it healthy. Lotions, soaps and bath oils can help prevent flare-ups, as can antihistamine tablets and in severe cases steroids. As the condition can be caused by a number of factors it may take a while to find a treatment that works, the effectiveness also largely depends on the correct use of the treatment.
